Last half term in art, we enjoyed creating artwork for our whole school Diversity art exhibition which our parents attended on the last day of school before May half term. After discussing what the word diversity meant and identifying how we are all different to one another in Year 6, we began by looking at a range of portraits by different artists and discussed the techniques and media they used to create their portraits. After deciding that we would use pencil for our own self portraits, we practised drawing techniques such as hatching, cross-hatching and stippling as well as applying different pressure and using different hardness of pencils to create different shades and tones.
When creating our self portraits, we thought carefully about which direction the light was coming from and which areas of the face would be in shadow using mirrors to observe. We used different coloured pencils to reflect our diverse skin tones.
