Courageous Advocacy

Courageous Advocacy is all about nurturing children to become agents of change— to help them to become compassionate, informed, and brave enough to speak out against injustice, whether it’s local or global.

Courageous advocacy is:

“The act of speaking out against an issue of injustice, often on behalf of those whose voice is not heard.”

At St. Aidan’s this is woven into the fabric of school life through our Christian values of Hope, Wisdom, Forgiveness, Compassion, Love and Courage and the teachings of Jesus.

Why It Matters

Courageous advocacy helps children:

  • Develop a strong moral compass
  • Understand their role in a wider community
  • Build confidence to speak up for others
  • Live out Christian values in meaningful ways

It’s not just about fundraising or awareness—it’s about character formation, empathy, and action.

How do we nurture Courageous Advocacy at St. Aidan’s?

Culture: St. Aidan’s fosters a culture where children feel safe to express their opinions, raise concerns, and challenge the status quo.  Teachers and staff act as allies, encouraging respectful debate and modelling advocacy themselves.

Curriculum Design: Our curriculum addresses issues such as racial equality, identity, gender equality and the environment. Our RSHE curriculum focuses on empowering children to not only be proud of their own identity but also to take responsibility for ensuring that everyone can be their own ‘unique’ self. We are a ‘No Outsiders’ school and incorporate these resources/texts into our curriculum.

Pupil Leadership: Our school council, Leading Lights, and Reading ambassadors empower children to lead initiatives and advocate for change within the school. At St. Aidan’s CE Primary School, we are delighted to be taking part in the Superkind programme. The Superkind mission is to engage and motivate children to take action for causes they care about and make a genuine difference to the world around them. We will work to achieve the Social Impact Schools Award, that will formally recognise and celebrate the amazing social actions our children take over the school year. We were lucky enough to receive this award in 2025.

At St. Aidan’s, we believe that courageous advocacy is essential for creating a just and compassionate world.  We strive to equip our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and conviction to become change-makers, both within our school community and beyond.
