Chapel

This morning, it was Year 5’s turn to visit the chapel with Reverend Yvonne.

Yvonne spoke to the children about candle mass being a feast of the church, as Christmas time ends. Some of the children spoke about how candles are brought forward to be blessed and how candle mass is all about light in the world.

After we sang the hymn; ‘The Benediction song’, a child read a short reading about Simeon in the temple. Simeon knew The Torah so well and trusted God and his promises to bring a messiah. Simeon longed to see the messiah before he died. Anna, who was also with Simeon, was also a very old lady and a widow. Anna spent time in the temple praying to God to see the messiah before she died too. When Simeon met the messiah, he looked at him and he knew that Jesus was the one who was going to save us all. Simeon spoke to Mary and Joseph saying; ‘A sword will pierce your own heart”. They had to take courage in their hearts.

We then focussed on the question; ‘What does it mean to take courage?’ Some answers included; doing the right thing and stepping out of your comfort zone. We then talked about how lights bring comfort. Yvonne shared how a night light reassures you that Jesus is with you and it never goes out. Torches help us focus on the right path and Jesus shows us the way to live. Our last light was candle light. We see these lights at celebrations, that bring us deep joy and help us to celebrate ‘life in all its fullness’. We see these things in daily life so know Jesus follows us anywhere we go.

We then read prayers, before receiving communion and blessings.
