Counting Collections

Reception Class love their weekly ‘Counting Collections’ session. Each week the children get to work in pairs to choose from the counting collections – a selection of boxes with a variety of different objects which they count. The session is split into four parts.
1. Choose – the children choose a box from the counting collections library.

2. Plan – the children then decide which tools they will use to help them to count. This could be a selection of pots or containers, number tracks or counting frames.

3. Count – the children count the objects in their collection.

4. Record – the children record their counting. This could be by drawing the objects, mark making to represent each item or writing the numeral. Lots of children choose to record in lots of different ways.

This is definitely part of the week the children look forward to and their counting skills are fantastic! Look at some of the wonderful counting and recording they have done this week.
