What a lovely afternoon we have had at the Discovery Museum! We were all excited as for some of us, it was our first time going to the museum. After we got off the coach, we went straight onto the first floor of the museum, known as the ‘Charge Gallery’. In this area, there were lots of artefacts and information about the First World War, which was perfect for our history topic.
We learnt that soldiers wore clothing for different occasions, how horses were used in war, how soldiers felt living in trenches and so much more! I was certainly impressed with some of the historical knowledge we had about the war. After this, we got into pairs and worked together to help one of the animals to find their friends and discover their stories during the war.
Finally, we were split into groups with our group leaders to explore each area and took part in hands-on activities such as matching modern items to its historic equivalent, dressing up as soldiers, matching up the correct military uniforms… and one of the children’s favourites was definitely ‘testing our nose’ by identifying the common smells that soldiers had faced during war.
It has been wonderful to take the children out to explore and each of them have really enjoyed it and would love to go there again.
