Traditional Indian Drumming

This half term in music year six have been focusing on traditional Indian music . Today we felt very lucky to have a special lesson taught by Adam- our drummer teacher in school. Adam brought along some Tabla drums to the lesson and showed us the different sounds that the drums can make by using different parts of our hands.

We then listened to some famous Indian artists and the techniques that they use when playing the drums. We found it interesting how Indian music typically has no harmony and how the pitch and tempo can change so dramatically throughout. In the final part of the lesson, we explored Konnakol which is the spoken rhythmic syllables of south Indian music. We enjoyed the challenge of making and performing our own Konnakol.
