Year 3 Geography Trip

Wow! Year 3 had an amazing and informative trip to Northern Gas this week. We learned and heard about climate and climate change as well as global warming and net zero. We has lots of fun seeing the effects of what global warming is by wrapping ourselves up in warm blankets which really helped us to understand what global warming and the greenhouse effect actually means.

The first experiment we completed involved some warm and cold water and some ice cubes. The children compared the effects the water had with the ice cube looking at which water made the ice melt quicker. We learned that the warmer water made the ice melt quicker; we then discussed how this was the problem with the ice caps in the world.

After a break, we learned all about the positive effects of insulating houses and the reasons why. This learning led to another experiment which the children really enjoyed – especially using the thermometers!

After lunch, we were fortunate enough to have a tour around the site. We looked at and talked to the supplies of gas on site and where in the world it is supplied to. Then we toured the new Hydrogen Homes which Northern Gas are promoting to hopefully end up being the new way houses are built in the future to help work towards achieving net zero.
