year 2 visit Grace Darling museum

As part of history topic Year 2 visited the RNLI Grace Darling museum in Bamburgh. A volunteer for the museum spent time sharing lots of information about Grace’s life. We heard how her sea rescue was so unusual for a women in the Victorian era that she became an unwanted heroine.
We heard that in her early life her father taught her how to read, write and arithmetic. This was useful as once news spread of her heroic rescue she received hundreds of letters from all over the country, and she replied to them all.
It was reported by locals that Grace had not liked the new status, she and her family received many gifts including £50 from Queen Victoria which was equivalent to £500 today! She didn’t want any of this and was quite embarrassed!

Unfortunately Grace died 4 years after the rescue from tuberculosis, she as buried in the cemetery at St Aidans church where you can also visit her memorial.

After a morning at the Grace Darling museum we enjoyed our lunch in the Walled Gardens, had an ice cream and had a wonderful time at the beach.
