This afternoon, Year 2 visited The Big Local Allotment.
We met Suzanne who talked to us about gardening and allotments. She asked us what we thought an allotment was and if we’ve ever visited one before. She then asked the children what can grow in an allotment. Some of our comments included; ‘vegetables’, ‘fruit’ and ‘flowers’. Suzanne told the children that people who own allotments grow different foods to give to people to eat. She told us that some of the jobs that we need to undertake during Autumn can be; harvesting, weeding, feeding the soil and tidying up, all in preparation for Spring starting.
Suzanne then spoke to us about the dangers when gardening. She told us that we must wear protective gloves when undertaking certain jobs, if we see a bee to move away from it calmly and not to eat any of the fruit, vegetables or plants we can see growing because some could harm us and are not clean until they are washed correctly.
We then had the chance to look around the garden. We were shocked at the size of a pumpkin we found and a tiny snail!
The children then took part in 5 activities:
Investigating what mini beasts are living in soil
Harvesting corn
Bunching together lavender and deseeding
Washing and drying mint leaves ready to make mint tea
Using a spade to chop up weeds
We all had a fantastic afternoon working together and we hope we can visit again soon!
