Keeping Our Teeth Healthy

This half term in Science, Year 4 have been learning about the process of digestion. Last week, we learnt about the different types of teeth that animals including humans have and compared the teeth of herbivores, omnivores and carnivores.

This week we learnt about the importance of keeping our teeth healthy in order to prevent diseases such as tooth decay. We set up an investigation to observe the effect of sugary drinks on our teeth. We put eggs into both water and Coca Cola and then did the same with eggs covered in toothpaste. We observed the eggs over the next couple of days. We found that the eggs in the cola drink began to discolour and the eggshell started to disintegrate after a few days while the eggs covered in toothpaste and in water remained intact. This highlighted the importance of brushing our teeth regularly, especially after eating and drinking foods with a high sugar content.

We thought about other ways we can keep our teeth healthy, such as regular visits to the dentist and trying not to eat after brushing our teeth at night.
