Cooking After School Club – Cheese and Fruit Scones

For this week’s Cooking After School Club, the children from Year 3 and 4 made their own cheese scones and fruit scones.

First, we made sure our hands were clean, popped on our aprons and made sure our table surface was clean ready to roll out our dough.

To make the cheese scones we added 225g self raising flour and 50g margarine to a bowl. We mixed the ingredients together with a spoon, then had to use our hands to make sure the butter was mixed in thoroughly with the flour! Our hands became very messy, very quickly! We then added in a pinch of salt, 75g grated cheese, a sprinkle of mustard powder and 150ml milk. Once added, we mixed them altogether with our hands to make a dough. Once the dough was formed, we sprinkled flour onto our table surface and rolled the dough into it. We kneaded the dough with our hands until our dough was ready to roll. We used rolling pins to roll out the dough and used shape cutters to cut out our scone shapes. We then lay our shapes onto baking trays lined with greaseproof paper. We baked the scones in the oven for around 12 minutes.

To make the fruit scones, we added 225g self raising flour and 50g margarine to a bowl. We mixed the ingredients together with a spoon, then had to use our hands to make sure the butter was mixed in thoroughly with the flour! Again, our hands became very messy! We then added in a pinch of salt, 25g caster sugar, 50g currants and 150ml milk. Once added, we mixed together them altogether with our hands to make a dough. Once the dough was formed, we sprinkled flour onto our table surface and rolled the dough into it. We had to watch our currants because some of them kept escaping from our dough! We kneaded the dough with our hands until our dough was ready to roll. We used rolling pins to roll out the dough and used shape cutters to cut out our scone shapes. We then lay our shapes onto baking trays lined with greaseproof paper. We baked the scones in the over for around 12 minutes.

The smells coming from the ovens were amazing! We felt like we were working in a bakery!

Next week we will be making chocolate chip cookies.
