Spring Term Music in Year 5

At the start of this week’s Music lesson, the children listened to the song “Jailhouse Rock”. They were then asked what they like or disliked about the music.

We then re-capped last weeks lesson and how we looked at genres, which included; blues, swing, jazz, big band and ragtime and how blues started off all of the genres in music. Penny then asked if the children could remember any musicians. Some comments included:

“Robert Johnson”

“Bob Marley”

Penny then asked if the children could remember what sorts of instruments are used in a big band. Some answers included: trumpet, double bass, trombone, saxophone, and clarinet.

Penny then told the children that they were going to continue to sing ‘Wade in the water’ that they began a couple of weeks ago.

After singing, they were then given a piece of music to appraise, which was ‘Ray Charles – I got a woman’. The children had to say what they liked or disliked about the music, what instruments are used, when the music was written and what style of music it is. The children’s comments include:

“1950’s”

“Saxophone”

“Piano”

“Male voice”

Penny then said we would be focusing on music from the 1950’s with genres including; Pop, Rock ‘n’ Roll and R&B. We looked at key features of music from the 1950’s such as; fast in tempo, elements of blue and The Pentatonic Scale. We then looked at Rock ‘n’ Roll musicians from the 1950’s including; Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry.

We then appraised another piece of music, which was ‘Bill Hailey and the Comets – Rock around the clock’. Some comments included;

“Double bass”

“Saxophone”

“You rock all day long”

Penny then asked the children what differences they notice between the two pieces of music from last week and this week. She then told the children they would dance with a partner to ‘Rock around the clock’.
