This week, we have celebrated British Science Week at St. Aidan’s. The theme of this year’s celebration is ‘connections’. We decided to make a connection between all of the classes by sending a message, using our scientific knowledge and skills. In EYFS, children made boats out of different materials to send their message to Year 1 across a water tray. In Year 1, children used natural materials they collected around school to send their message to Year 2, while in Year 2, children used different materials to make a bridge between two tables to send their message to Year 3. In Year 3, the children used Morse Code to send their message to Year 4 who had to decode it. In Year 4, the children made telephone cups, experimenting with different lengths of string, while in Year 5, children made catapults to send their message along to the corridor to Year 6. Finally, year 6 used their knowledge of electrical circuits and sound to send their message using Morse Code.
Year 5 and 6 were also lucky enough to be a part of a ‘Thinking Like a Scientist’ workshop led by Newcastle University students.
