In Year 3 our topic this half term is The Romans. With such a rich heritage of Roman History on our doorstep, we have been luckily enough to experience the ruins and relics first hand.
On arrival, we split into 3 groups. Mrs Bullerwell’s group went to The Vindolanda Museum first, where we were able to see the fascinating artefacts found at Vindolanda. We saw objects such as combs, pottery, jewellery, shoes, and of course the famous Vindolanda Tablets. Whilst we were in the museum, Mrs Newton and Mrs Lishman’s group were able to explore the ruins of the fort. They were able to talk to the excavators, who were extremely receptive to the children. That morning, the excavators found a piece of pottery and they gave the children the piece to hold and look more closely at. What a privilege!
After a much needed lunch, we got back on the bus the venture to The Roman Army Museum. Here, we were able to experience what life would have been like for Roman Soldiers who lived on Hadrian’s Wall. We did this via a 3D cinema experience. Our final activity was in a classroom with a Roman teacher, where we learnt what it would have been like for children in education. A very fulfilling, exciting, experience was had by all.
