Today we had a great day at the Discovery Museum. We started with Professor Pumpernickel’s Science Show where he wowed us with tricks, chemistry and lots of fun. There was fire, explosions, chemical reactions….. and magic? Or was it really science?!?! We even watched sound waves as fire to our favourite music.
Next we enjoyed a workshop called ‘Essence of nature’ where we investigated art work. We explored with our senses saying what we could see, how the paintings made us feel and the sounds we might hear. Our next task involved working with a partner who closed their eyes; we had to describe a new painting using all of our senses before letting them see the painting. Finally we used coffee filter paper, felt tip pens and water to create our own art work.
Our final workshop involved ‘Solids, liquids and gases’ and began with categorising items into each. We were then given balloons and had to describe their properties. We then turned solids into gases by inflating a balloon by adding lemonade to a crushed solid. The solid dissolved and gave off a gas which inflated the balloon. Another activity involved shaking cream and seeing if we could turn it into a solid…… butter! The final activity involved exploring a corn flour mix (Oobleck) and deciding whether it was a solid or liquid. It is actually a non-Newtonian fluid.
