Year 4 have started a new unit in science this week ‘State of Matter’. The children thought ‘matter’ and what it is. They quickly discovered it is a substance that is in everything, including themselves. They were then given a collection of materials to sort. These included; wood, plastic, material, wool, soap, ketchup, salt, sand, sponge, rice, water, paper, metal and ice. The children discussed together how they would sort their materials.

Some children grouped their based on colour, others on weight and others on their transparency. Following a discussion linked to the State of Matter of the materials the children were able to group them into solids and liquids.
