Our Computing topic this half term is ‘Systems and Searching’.
First, we discussed the question, ‘What does the word system mean?’ Some comments included:
‘A journey’
‘A system will be used for apps such as YouTube and Amazon’
’The World Wide Web plays a part in lots of systems’
We then looked at the system for a bicycle and answered the question; ‘If a bicycle wasn’t linked together, would there be a system?’ No, because we know that parts such as; brakes, pedals, frame, bars and wheels all play a part in the system in order for the bicycle to move.
We then moved on to look at a digital system of a washing machine. We answered the question; ‘How is this system different to a bicycle?’ We knew that digital systems like a washing machine or tumble dryer require a system that uses buttons to control on the outside.
Our task, in partners, was then to look at the computer system of an Amazon locker. The children had to think about the process of an order being placed online to then the customer receiving it. Some of the questions the children had to answer included; ‘How does the order get picked from the warehouse shelves?’ and ‘How does the order get from the warehouse to the correct smart locker?’
