Our unit of work this week in English was Performance Poetry. We listened to, rehearsed and performed a number of poems about plastic pollution. We enjoyed working in groups to decide on the different techniques that we were going to use when performing the poem ‘Just One Straw’ After lots of rehearsal and practice, we learnt the poem by heart and performed our poem to the rest of the school during our National Poetry Day assembly on Thursday 3rd October. It was also brilliant to see the performances of the other classes! At the end of the day, we invited our parents in to our classroom to watch our performance. They were very impressed!
On Friday, we welcomed a poet called Steve Tasane into school. We enjoyed hearing about his life as a poet and what he uses as inspiration for his poetry. He then worked with us to write our own rhyming counting poem. Each line had four beats and we had to think carefully about the number of syllables we needed for each line. At the end of the day, Steve performed some of his poetry to the whole school and we were able to join in with repeated refrains in his poems.
