Year 3 walked along to the Quayside this afternoon to visit the site of Wilson’s factory in Gateshead, where the Great Fire of Gateshead started.
On the way, we past the old Police Station at the end of Swing Bridge where PC Ewart first raised the alarm of the fire. Having spotted the location of the factory, at the foot of the new Tyne Bridge, we then walked up the footpath to St. Mary’s Church. This survived the Great Fire but was unfortunately hit by large boulders during the explosion. The children were delighted to find these boulders on the north side of the church.
Despite being very cold and very tired after the long walk, the children had a very enjoyable afternoon and were commended on their wonderful manners by members of the public.
