Children’s Mental Health Week in Year 6

This year’s theme for Children’s Mental Health Week is Know Yourself, Grow Yourself. We thought about and discussed our strengths, challenges and things that we would like to improve about ourselves. Through celebrating children’s differences and respecting each other as individuals, we agreed that we could make one another feel valued. We used Oliver Jeffer’s The Day the Crayons Quit as inspiration for some informal letter writing about emotions and understanding different people’s perspectives and viewpoints. After sharing the book, we wrote letters to the different crayons from Duncan in groups, recognising why they felt aggrieved and suggesting how we could support them in how they were feeling. We discussed how sometimes just having someone who is truly listening to you who you know cares can have a dramatic positive impact on your mental health.
