Today, Year 6 enjoyed a visit to Durham Cathedral to learn about pilgrimage. We shared our knowledge of what a pilgrimage is and why pilgrims go on a pilgrimage with our tour guide – he was very impressed with our learning so far this half term in RE. We were showed some Pilgrim Passports which some Christian pilgrims choose to use and complete as they travel around pilgrimage sites of the UK and Europe. Then we were given our very own Pilgrim Passports to complete a pilgrimage around Durham Cathedral. We visited St Cuthbert’s Shrine, learning about the story of his life, how he came to be moved from Lindisfarne to Durham during the Viking invasion and how pilgrims used to and still do travel on a pilgrimage to visit his burial site. We also found out about northern saints such as St Aidan, St Hild, St Oswald and St Margaret, and how they became saints thanks to them choosing to follow Jesus’ example in their lives, before visiting St Bede’s tomb.
