Year 3 enjoyed an informative discussion with Lilian, who was a child during World War II.
Lilian told the children all about her memories of the War. Lilian was 10 years old when war broke out. She remembers the Prime Minister announcing the start of the war and the worry everyone felt.
Her parents decided that she would not be evacuated because they wanted all of the family to stay together. Many of Lilian’s friends were evacuated and she missed them terribly.
Lilian was the eldest of 8 children so, because school had closed, she stayed at home and helped her mother to look after her younger siblings.
Lilian told the children that when the air raid siren sounded during the Blitz, she would rush with her family into their air raid shelter that her father built in the back garden. They covered it with plants and moss so the German soldiers couldn’t see it.
Lilian remembers the black out and having to close her blinds and curtains every night. She was given a brightly coloured badge to wear on her coat so that she could be seen.
