Beamish – World War II

Year 3 enjoyed a visit to Beamish Museum where they took part in a workshop ‘Evacuees in World War II’.

The children imagined they were living during World War II and had been evacuated to a farm house in the middle of Beamish countryside.

They were involved in a variety of fun learning activities which allowed them to learn about life on the Home Front as well as empathise with what it was like to be an evacuee during the war.

The children took part in a variety of fun learning activities which included:

 –  preparing for the black out by covering the windows in the farmhouse

 –  identifying whether planes were from the British Airforce or the German Army

 –  exploring an Anderson air raid shelter

 – identifying different jobs on the farm they would be involved in such as:

       * mucking out the chickens, sheep barn and pig sty

  * collecting eggs from the hens.

 – writing a letter home to their parents.

Everyone had lots of fun and especially enjoyed the visit to the old town and tram ride.
