Friendship Week in Year 6

This week, we have enjoyed taking part in a variety of activities to celebrate Friendship Week. In RSHE, we learnt about the British value of mutual respect and found out more about the Equality Act. We then discussed the importance of celebrating diversity and treating everyone with equality, regardless of our differences. As part of our No Outsider’s curriculum, we read the book ‘You’re So Amazing’ by James and Lucy Catchpole. We were able to engage in a thoughtful discussion about disability and how disabled people may feel about being treated differently. We talked about how disabled people may become upset or frustrated even if other people perceive themselves to be acting with kindness or in sympathy, and that most disabled people just want to be treated like everyone else. We enjoyed creating artwork with this in mind, coming up with adjectives to describe disabled people’s skills, talents and personalities that we should recognise rather than just thinking of them and seeing them as having a disability only.

Year 6 also visited St Chad’s with Year 5 to join in with Side by Side Arts Big Sing. We sang a range of songs about friendship and empowering one another. It was a fantastic opportunity celebrating friendship and community through music.
