On Friday, we welcomed our family and loved ones into school for our Year 6 collective worship. As we commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday at St Aidan’s, we focused our collective worship on the Christian value of forgiveness. We shared stories of two Christians from the past who found the courage to forgive those who had done them wrong, Corrie Ten Boom and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. While Corrie Ten Boom met and forgave one of the SS guards who had imprisoned her in a concentration camp during the Holocaust, Archbishop Desmond Tutu chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Committee which aimed to repair the relationship between black and white people in South Africa after apartheid ended. Two of our children performed outstanding monologues in which the children heard inspirational words that Corrie and Desmond had spoken when talking about forgiveness. Then a group of children performed a short drama sketch in which a boy continued to sit on a wasp, even though it was hurting him, as he believed that he would be getting revenge on the wasp. Year 6 explained that this was not a wise decision and that unforgiveness can often hurt us more than the person who did something wrong.
Teachers and parents commented that Year 6 had delivered some inspirational words that children and adults alike can learn from. Well done Year 6!
