Last week, St Aidan’s marked VE (Victory in Europe) Day. We found out that it had been 80 years since peace was declared in Europe at the end of the Second World War, and enjoyed looking at photographs and videos of celebrations at the time. We thought about the emotions that would have been felt by leaders, soldiers and civilians of the Allied Forces, as well as comparing them to those of the defeated countries. Whilst our younger children painted the Union Jack flag, made posters to celebrate VE Day and designed commemorative coins, our older children looked at and listened to historical sources of information to find out people’s reactions to peace in Europe at the time, such as Winston Churchill’s VE Day speech, first-hand accounts of British people and British newspaper reports.
