The Great Fire of Gateshead

Year 3 have started to learn about The Great Fire of Gateshead in their history lessons.

Today, they walked to the Quayside to visit the site of Wilson’s factory in Gateshead, where the Great Fire of Gateshead started.

On the way, we past the old Police Station at the end of Swing Bridge where PC Ewart first raised the alarm of the fire. Having spotted the location of the factory, at the foot of the new Tyne Bridge, we walked up the footpath to St. Mary’s Church. This survived the Great Fire but was unfortunately hit by large boulders during the explosion. We were delighted to find these boulders on the north side of the church.
