Science
Through the study of science, pupils will understand the world through the three key areas of biology, chemistry and physics. Our pupils will develop their experimental thinking and curiosity to investigate the world around them. They will become reflective thinkers who see links and patterns in a meaningful way and acquire specific skills and knowledge to enable them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and provide them with an understanding of the uses of science for both today and in the future. Through our curriculum provision, we endeavour to embrace a child’s natural curiosity about the universe around them, whilst simultaneously promoting a respect for all living organisms and the environment.

Science Week 2023
This week, we have celebrated British Science Week at St. Aidan's. The theme of this year's celebration is 'connections'. We decided to make a connection between all of the classes by sending a message, using our scientific knowledge and skills. In EYFS, children made...
Great North Museum
Reception Class visited the Great North Museum today. We started our day by taking part in a ‘ Dinky Dinos’ workshop. To start the session we listened to a story about a stegosaurus that hatched from an egg. Our next activity was working with the parachute pretending...
Year 5 science
Year 5 were fortunate to be taught by two Newcastle University students in science today. The children learned about different types of scientists including marine biologists, engineers, chemists to name a few. They then investigated what scientists actually do such...
Science Club
This half term Year 1 and 2 were invited to take part in an after-school science club. Over the six weeks we have completed many different investigations and experiments covering all areas of Science. We have made tin foil boats, lava lamps, slime, towers made of...
Porridge tasting
This week Nursery have been learning about the traditional tale ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. Our number of the week is number 3, so we have been counting in groups of 3. We have had lots of fun scooping, pouring and measuring porridge oats in our water tray this...
Year 3 at High Force
In Science this half term we have been learning about the different types of natural rocks. As part of the the learning we have been fortunate enough to visit High Force and experience the rocks in their natural habitat. After many winding roads, and quite a long...
Building Circuits
Our topic in Science is ‘Electricity’. We have been exploring what circuits are and the parts that are in a circuit. I must say, the children are fantastic at remembering the components of a circuit diagram. This week, we worked together to build simple circuits.
Science- Forces
We have developed our knowledge of the push and pull forces needed to move an object. We have investigated different forces including wind and gravity, which objects float and which sink and how to increase the distance an object travels by reducing friction, we have...
Year 2 at Gibside
In English, we are reading ‘A First Book of Nature’ by Nicola Davies. We have learnt lots about nature and this week we went to Gibside National Trust and had a fantastic time. We first got on the coach with excitement and after 20 minutes of our journey, we were...
